In high school, we had a group of people who we saw every day. We went to classes together, ate lunch together, and probably were involved in all of the same things. We were basically never apart from that friend group, and it didn't really bother us.
Now that we're in college, it's different. We get to choose who we spend time with, and we get to choose who we see the most. Ultimately, we get to choose our friends.
But with that comes decisions: who do we give our time to? Who do we devote our attention to? Who is deserving of our time?
I've come to the conclusion that some people aren't worth my time.
We have one life to live, one life to spend time with people we care about. And some people just don't deserve to be a part of it.
Some people are emotionally draining, some people just want to be friends with you to get something, and others just aren't the people you know you need to be surrounded by.
I don't want to constantly be doing things I know I don't enjoy or be around people who don't make me happy. I don't want to be around people who do things I don't like or who do things that I don't think are right. And I don't want to be around people who treat me like an option.
I just don't want to waste my time on people who won't stick around for the long haul.
Some people might just think I'm picky or maybe my standards are too high, but at this point in time, I've come to the conclusion that some people aren't worth my time nor do they deserve it.
Friends are forever, and you've got to choose good ones. It's a fact. They're the people who will call you when they know you're sad, they're the people who'll celebrate your birthday even though it's in the dead of winter, and they're the people who will always be there no matter what stupid things you may or may not have done.
You don't want to spend your life surrounded by people who don't make you happy or aren't "your people." That won't make for a good life. And you want a good life.
Now we have the choice of who we let in and who we let go. It's a choice that can make or break our sanity. It's a one of the most important choices we can make.
And, we have to realize that some people don't make the cut.
