When You Move Away From Home...
Silvia Otte

When you move away from home, you find out that life isn't as magical as it's made out to be. You start to notice how fast your paycheck runs out, and how the milk doesn't buy itself. You start to see how fast the clothes pile up and how little time you have to wash them. You start to see how tired you are and how you simply just don't have the time to sleep. And you start to see how hard life really is.

When you move away from home, it makes you appreciate the little things so much more. Ya know the little lunch dates with grandma and the random text messages from grandpa. It makes you miss being able to scare the crap at of your brother at any given minute. It makes you miss your mom's nagging and your dad's constant lectures about life. It makes you miss the dog hair your had to brush off of you every time you left the house. And it makes you miss the smell of bacon and eggs, every Saturday morning.

When you move away from home it forces you out of your comfort zone. You realize you don't have many friends and if you want to make some you need to put yourself in uncomfortable positions sometimes. It makes you realize that yes, you need to get your oil changed by yourself. It makes be a more independent, confident person.

When you move away from home you will struggle. You will cry a lot and you will want to go back home. You will probably call your mom every day and text your brother just to tell him he's weird. You will wonder if you're even meant to be here and what your purpose really is. But I promise you, this is all normal.

When you move away from home, you will long to go back no matter how many times you wished to leave already. When you move away from home, you will realize that you can do this on your own. You will see that you are a strong person. You are a smart person. You are independent, and you are free.

When you move away from home, you will feel sad and you will feel happy. You will feel scared and you will feel brave. You will persevere and you will be lazy. But most importantly, you will succeed.

When you move away from home, you will always know where to return.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
