When Baton Rouge was hit by the flood that damaged over 60,000 houses, citizens didn't just watch their house slip from their hands. They banded together and helped each other in this great time of need. There have been many devastating floods in America and every time we see neighbors, friends, strangers and even people across the country and world coming to together to help out. Whether it was Katrina, Floyd or the historic flood in South Carolina last summer we see people stepping out for those in need.
Pianist Mark Chasuk played for all to hear in a pile of debris. As he was helping a family clear out their house he saw the piano and decided to see if it still worked. It did and now the 16 year old has brought hope and smiles to flood victims as the video went viral.
Another youth that has brought joy to flood victims is Carson Boutte. The 9 year was asked what he wanted for his birthday and he said he wanted to provide lunch for the victims of the flooding in Baton Rouge. His mom decided that she would spend $100 on pizza for the victims as Carson's birthday present. She also put it on Facebook so other families could chip in. The response to this birthday boy's wish was massive. In the end one little boy's wish turned into 363 pizzas.
Valerie Bourgeoi told USA Today that the police brutality injustice has not been solved that people have been putting those issues on hold as she states, "They are important, but are they as important as so many people losing everything? The floods are a powerful punch," she said. "It might make us all realize that all lives matter." Other victims relay that in this tragedy black and white doesn't matter. The flood hits everyone and everyone, not matter what race comes to help each other out.
You see in tragedy we find the beauty of humanity. When tragedy strikes in your area will you stand by and watch or will you be a light in the darkness?
