I am about to be 22 years old and still have to complete my associates degree. I took several years off from school and I constantly felt judged and a failure for it. I wanted to just stop working and focus on school, but my options were not allowed at the time. I have worked since I was 15 and have had a full time job since I was 18. There were a few times in my life that I worked a full time job on top of another part time job, and it taught me a lot about hard work. Looking back, I do not regret taking that time off of school. I am more mature now and have learned so much. And I start back up in the fall!
When you decide to take time off of school, understand these things below:
-Do not compare yourself to others
-Life is not a race
-Take time to think what you really want
-Only surround yourself with people who support your choices
I only have friends that don't judge me and only offer support to me when I express that I am currently on a break from school. They understand, there is acute criticism from them and that is the way it should be.
In my life, I have hit several bumps in the road that prevented me from letting me finish my degree. Home life, finances, personal issues and mental health, the list goes on. I wasn't ready, and that's why I understand others who aren't either.
When you take a break from something, your brain allows you to feel like you have a clear mind. You can actually "think" about something thoroughly without other issues going on. Write down the pros and cons and decide if it is better for you to remain on a break or keep up what you are doing. Never be afraid to step away from something for a short time so you can evaluate the situation.
To add, getting a degree is not a timeline. 22 and graduated? Awesome. 54 and finally finished your program? Congrats. 16 and deciding whether or not you want to go college? Take all the time you need. Life is not a race, and school does not have age limits for when you finish, you do it on your own terms when you feel ready. There were many courses I took in college that I had older classmates in. They always expressed how they felt like the black sheep and felt like they delayed their opportunities in life. It tore me down to see that people felt this way. No matter how old or young you are, you do you and shut out the other negativity. Not to mention, its even harder to finish a degree as an adult! All the more responsibilities and priorities you have going on, but you still manage to do it. That is amazing to me, keep it up!
If you feel like you are ever unsure about going to college or do want a break, allow yourself to give your brain the time to decide. No rash decisions or impulsive mistakes anymore. Think with a clear head and ignore what anyone else has to say. When the time comes to receive your diploma, if you do, you will be the one walking, not them.
Stay strong and positive!
Love Always, Mel.
