The revival show we've all been waiting for is definitely happening. " Gilmore Girls" will be coming to Netflix in the form of four 90-minute long episodes. So what has caused the most excitement in regards to the revival? It's not the prospect of discovering what happened with Lorelai and Luke (a.k.a. the dreamy diner we all know in love). It's not the news of Paris' return as an obnoxious, yet somehow still lovable character. There isn't even much excitement around seeing Lorelai and Rory share the amazing bond they have as mother and daughter. So what is all the hype about?
For those that haven't been reading all the articles, fans are excited that all three of Rory's previous boyfriends are coming back for the revival. While I will admit to being partial to the bad boy, book loving Jess, I'm failing to see why fans are making such a big deal out of Rory's exes. Sure, all three boys were a fun and dramatic addition to the show — but is it necessary that we say that the revival will be a "battle" between Jess, Dean, and Logan for Rory's affection?
Rory has never needed a guy in her life to be able to accomplish things. Though she dated boys, she always seemed fairly dependent from them. Of course, she got her heart broken, but she moved on and sometimes seemed to get along better without them there. It's not to say that the boys shouldn't be in the show, because they absolutely should. Does one of them really need to be in a relationship with Rory, though? Rory could be seen as a role model for young girls trying to be more independent. She is in control of her own life and is mature when it comes to making decisions about her future. She doesn't let people get in the way of her achieving goals. Yet, at the same time, we can still often see Rory as a young girl with a full range of emotions, someone who is kind and sensible, trying to navigate through her life. Rory is a well-developed character that possesses the happy medium that we all wish we could be.
Rory Gilmore is not just a woman attached to one of the attractive men that happen to be on this show. She is not a woman who is waiting for the day she can get hitched and she doesn't spend every moment of life thinking about how she will make the decision between three men that have already broken her heart.
My plea is that we stop writing articles about how Rory Gilmore's most important decision will be the one she makes when she chooses between Jess, Dean and Logan. Rory, surely, will have plenty important decisions to make that don't involve three men.
