Reasons why the events in our lives can relate to songs on a playlist

Music is a part of everyone’s lives whether we know it or not. In one way, our lives could be compared to a music playlist—each song representing a particular moment captured in the lyrics of our favorite songs. Music is a necessity to our lives and without it I honestly don’t think life would be the same. Music helps us to express our emotions and effect our mood. Recently, I’ve been paying closer attention to the songs that make up the playlist to my life. Last week, I was listening to the radio when I realized all of this was true. The song “This is Gospel” by Panic! At the Disco came on. I remembered the very first time I heard this song over spring break when my cousins and I were tubing in Florida and screaming the lyrics on the top of our lungs. Personally, I’m not a fan of this song, but because of the positive memories associated with it I tend to listen to it frequently.

In addition to helping us remember important moments in our lives, music is a way to show our emotions. Teenagers, for example, listen to upbeat music with happy themes when getting ready for a party, but sad songs after ending a relationship. They listen to music that displays their mood and continue to remind them of the way they should feel. In today’s society, every action can be subject to judgement by others. Music is one of these ways. The songs we listen to affect the way we feel and also reflect our values. Even with a catchy beat, the songs we like affect the way people view us. When my friends give me their AUX cord to play music in their cars, I play songs that relate to the way we feel or the event we are attending.

Although none of these songs are necessarily the same style of music, they all have valuable memories attached to them. 20 years from now when I hear these songs, I hope to be able to remember these memories and share them with my children. These are some of the songs on my life playlist.

  1. Crank That by Soulja Boy
  2. Legend by Drake
  3. Jar of Hearts by Cristina Perry
  4. Best Thing I Never Had by Beyonce
  5. This Is Gospel by Panic! At the Disco
  6. Bad Day by Daniel Powter
  7. Verge by Owl City

So, what songs make up the playlist of your life?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
