The game "Payday 2" is a sequel to the original game, "Payday: The Heist". The game was released August 13, 2013 by Overkill Software and published by 505 Games. The game itself is currently available for Windows, Linux, Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Xbox One, and Playstation 4. The game itself is a co-op shooter where you and your friends can play as a group of clown-masked heisters bent on robbing as much cash as possible from the federal government. Heists range from the classic bank robbery to rigging elections and smuggling nuclear warheads. The focus here, though, is not quite what the game is about or the ethics of such, but the fact that performing a full blown robbery could actually rack up quite the bill. The game "Payday 2" features an economy of sorts where you earn money from each heist to spend on special skills, equipment, and more. The part that is astounding is some of the price points within the game. For the sake of measuring, we're going off of the price points of "Payday 2" as there is far more equipment and price figures in the game.
Price Point 1: Guns
One of the easiest things to measure in the game is probably the mass amount of guns available. To start off, we're going to go with the first two guns earned in the game. The AMCAR rifle and the Chimano 88 Pistol. The AMCAR rifle is priced at $38,700 and the Chimano 88 Pistol is also priced at $38,700. If we add all this together, that's a whopping $77,400 in total for two guns. The closest thing I could find to these two guns was a Glock handgun and a Class 3 AR-15 rifle. Each priced at $600 and $2,200 respectively. If we loaded both guns and added them together, the real world equivalent would only set someone back $2,800. In fact, that's such a huge difference that the game's weaponry would cost nearly 28 TIMES more than the cost of the actual real deal.
Let's not forget ammunition, either. Each gun holds a certain amount
of ammo. You carry 153 total rounds of ammunition for the Chimano 88 and
a total of 220 rounds for the AMCAR rifle. For the sake of putting in
figures, we're going to assume that the Chimano 88 is a 9mm handgun, and the AMCAR
is a 5.56mm rifle. 9mm ammunition is roughly therein 28 cents a round,
and 5.56mm ammunition is roughly around 44 cents a round. $139.64 in total ammunition cost, but at 2,800% inflation, in the Payday universe, it would actually set someone back around $3,909.92 ... yikes.
If that's truly the case, then how much of a difference is it for other equipment with a 2,800% increase in cost?
Price Point 2: Suits
Price Point 3: Equipment
Ammo bag (unloaded): $50
Ammunition enough to re-supply two heisters (using figures from earlier): $279.28
Doctor Bag (First aid kit): $30
ECM Jammer (Makeshift radio jammer): $9
C4 (one pound): $20
8 duffel bags: $270.56
8 zip ties: $0.40
4 body bags: $17.96
4 power drills (Cordless): $596
4 masks (Custom made, Fiberglass): $340
Altogether, this comes out to around $1613.20 and with the sudden inflation of 2,800% it comes out to $45,169.60 for something as simple as robbing four stores (an actual level within the game). This is starting to get rather expensive, wouldn't you agree?
Price Point 4: Bringing it all together
So what's left? All that we really have left to roll with is all our previous figures, plus an escape van. Getting a used GMC Savana van will be around $15,400. In the Payday universe, that's $431,200.
The van, the guns, the ammunition, the suits, and the equipment, altogether, comes out to what now?
$2,732,009.28 for all four fully equipped heisters to rob four little shops somewhere in Washington D.C.
Wow, it's no wonder these guys rob places with an economy like that. But of course, this is all hypothetical money based on inflation figures to real world equivalents strictly in firearms compared earlier. Either way, it takes money to make money, I suppose. If you're interested in the game, you can pick it up at your local gaming store or the Steam application.
Luckily, it won't cost you $1,400.00 - $1,680.00.
