What's with All of These Challenges?

Parents, if you've ever wondered what your kids are up to, I may have an answer.

I can't necessarily pinpoint which challenge started it all. Over the past few years, people have been participating in many different challenges and uploading it to multiple social media outlets. Some of these trends were entertaining, creative and fun. Others were just plain foolish. I'd like to say it started with the cinnamon challenge. Even if it didn't that's where I'll start.

1. The Cinnamon Challenge

This challenge involved a person eating a spoonful of cinnamon while recording their reaction. As some of you may know, cinnamon is a strong seasoning and spice. Too much of it can actually cause people to suffer from asphyxiation. In other words, while doing this challenge, people were risking choking to death just for a little attention on social media. This is why some of the people in the videos would spit the cinnamon out. It was too overpowering for them. DON'T DO THIS. IT CAN KILL YOU.

2. The Fire Challenge

This has to be the absolute most unintelligent challenge to date. I'm trying to refrain from name-calling. This challenge was seriously people setting themselves on fire. WHY?! A person would usually pour some form of flammable liquid, such as lighter fluid or nail polish remover, on their body and then set themselves on fire while standing or sitting in a tub. As soon as the flames would appear, they would quickly turn the water on and put the fire out. Not only was this a danger to their lungs, these kids were willingly allowing themselves to suffer first and second degree burns. It's all fun and games until someone turns into the gingerbread man for Christmas. DON'T DO THIS. IT CAN KILL YOU.

3. The Charlie Charlie Challenge

My younger cousin told me about this challenge. According to Wikipedia, it's a "modern incarnation" of "Juego de la Lapicera," a Spanish game. In the game, you write "Yes" and "No" twice on a piece of paper and balance two pencils to see if you can get an answer to your question. It's similar to playing with a Magic 8-Ball with the concept being that you don't choose the answer. However, this is not the history that people have been lead to believe today. Now, the kids say that you call upon a boy named Charlie and ask him a question. These kids believe that they're summoning the spirit of a dead boy named Charlie. As if playing with Ouija boards weren't enough. So not only are they playing the game wrong, they're putting their parents in a frenzy by having them believe that their child is trying to summon demons in the house.

4. The Running Man Challenge

This challenge was a lot less dangerous than the others. I guess after setting yourself on fire, you need to settle down in life. This was a challenge for the whole family to enjoy. As the song "My Boo" by Ghost Town DJs plays, all you have to do is move your feet in a running position and dance. Kids and adults were uploading this challenge to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, you name it!

5. The Slim Thick Challenge

I must say that this one was rather hilarious. It involves at least two people in a car dancing to a small sample of Fetty Wap's song "Jimmy Choos." One person sits in the front seat or stands outside the door of the driver's side and dances. The video then goes to the backseat rider while they are dancing while sitting down. While they get out to dance more, the camera goes back to the person on the driver's side, who is out dancing. Many different version of this challenge have been done. Some popular social media icons have also participated.

6. The Hide The Body Challenge

This one is fairly new. It can also get you into trouble. In this challenge, one has to text their parent or parents and tell them that they've accidentally hit and killed someone. They then ask their parents to help them hide the body so that they won't get in trouble. Most parents freaked out. Some were actually going to aid their child in hiding a body. Others encouraged their child to go to the police. One parent even called the police on their child and told them to stay put. I don't know about y'all, but that's not the prank I intend on playing on my parents. Otherwise, hide the body might become a real thing. What I mean is, my parents would probably kill me if I ever played a trick on them like that. With that being said, guys, be mindful of your parents. If they are prone to strokes, seizures, heart attacks or panic attacks, do not play that prank on them. Don't raise their blood pressure. Sure, it might be funny to see what they'll say, but if you know your parents have these problems, don't risk it. Play that prank on your best friend or something. DON'T DO THIS. YOUR PARENTS MIGHT KILL YOU.

7. The Kylie Jenner Challenge

As some of you may or may not know, Kim Kardashian's little sister has had surgery to make her lips bigger. For some reason, people thought it was a good idea to try and get lips like hers by sucking air from a bottle. While keeping their lips sucked into the bottle for a few minutes, they used the "vacuum effect," which made their lips swell up. A lot of people had negative effects. Their lips stayed swollen for a while. Some even had their lips get bigger than anticipated. Moral of the story is to be happy with what you are born with. If you're not happy, don't try and do the homemade treatments. Go to a professional. DON'T DO THIS. YOU WILL LOOK LIKE ONE OF HOOTIE'S MISSING BLOWFISH.

8. The So Gone Challenge

This challenge brought back the song "So Gone," a song by the R&B singer, Monica. This song is over a decade old. In this challenge, a person would freestyle to an instrumental version of the song. It was a creative way for people to express their creativity. It also brought back a great song.

9. The You Name It Challenge

God bless Shirley Caesar. It has never been so easy to tell your family what you want to eat for the holidays. What started out as a song by Shirley Caesar called, "Hold My Mule," later turned into a remix of the part of the song where she lists different foods. "I got greens, beans, potatoes, tomatoes, lamb, ram, hog, dog..." Now I don't know about eating a dog, but lately, that segment of the song has gone viral. People have been uploading videos of themselves either dancing or freestyling to the song. In a recent interview, Shirley Caesar even expressed her delight in the use of her song.

10. The Mannequin Challenge

This is another fairly new challenge that everyone can participate in. This challenge is simply when everyone in the video stays completely still, resembling a mannequin. During this time, the person with the camera goes to different rooms to show the "mannequins" off. The song that most people have been using is "Black Beatles" by the Tupelo, Mississippi natives, Rae Sremmurd. Even one of The Beatles, Paul McCartney, participated in the challenge to the song. Sometimes during the challenge, while the camera operator goes to another room, the participants who are not on camera at the time switch positions. The camera person then films them in their new position. With the holidays still in action, if you're looking for a family activity, this would be it.

While some of these challenges are harmless, obviously there are others that can cause you harm. Why do we have all of these challenges? I don't know. It's like everyone wants to be Steve-O or Evel Knievel. Not everything needs to come with a warning label telling you not to try something at home. Just a heads up, if there's ever a bleach chugging challenge, it may be best to sit that one out.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
