It’s that time of year again: time for pumpkin spice lattes and oversized sweaters AND Apple’s release of the newest iPhone and iOS to make you feel like you have a new phone. This year’s iOS is packed with tons of new features!

I had the lucky opportunity to test out the newest iOS with an older model phone and a newer one this week as I downloaded it onto my iPhone 5S Wednesday before my iPhone 6s arrived Thursday! Since I had ordered a new phone I figured I would see how iOS 10 fared in terms of compatibility and functionality on the older models: which it passed with flying colors! So if you’re reading this to find out if it’s a good idea? I personally can say with sound mind, that it isn’t a terrible idea.

So here are some of my five favorite new features from the newest iOS!

1. Handwritten Messages

By far my favorite thing that is in this update is the handwritten messages! It brings a whole level of a personal touch when it comes to messaging loved ones! It definitely takes saying “Goodnight”, “I miss you”, “I love you” to a whole new level above a text!

2. Deleting Stock Applications

Finally, we can get rid of pesky apps that we don’t actually use, but take up space, that come stock with iPhone. I no longer have to look at ‘Stocks’ or ‘Tips’ on my screen! Although I did notice that when you delete ‘Stocks’ the app is completely gone and in order to gain functionality

3. 3D Touch Updates

Phones with 3D touch, like the 6S and 7, allow you to long press on a myriad of apps for more options. My favorites currently include the new ‘Flashlight’ ability to be on a low, medium or bright setting, also the ability to set a timer quickly from the 'Clock' and access your most recent messages quickly as well!

4. Person Specific Read Receipts

Just like the ability to put specific people on Do Not Disturb, you can now have person specific Read Receipts on. I really like this as I am one of the brave souls who kept Read Receipts on perpetually, but if someone was texting me that I didn’t want to know I had read their text I would turn them off while texting them.

5. Home Screen Update

This took a bit to get used to, but it’s really cool because you can interact a bit more on the home screen. But you can see your lock screen behind notifications, instead of it getting blacked out when you have something on your screen! You can also see a snippet of your conversation from your home screen and send multiple messages from the home screen!

So what’s your favorite one?!

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
