When people first hear the word fight, they automatically assume it's something physical between people. Or, an outcome of someone getting hurt. Fighting, in this context means to go after what you want, and to make sure no one takes it from you. It's about working hard and pushing yourself to go harder. Most people obtain this sense of fighting once they become sure of where they want to go in life. For me, I can't even think of a moment in life when I wasn't sure of where I wanted to be, and it hasn't changed.
Like many, I had to fight against teachers, family, peers, statistics, etc., to get to where I am today. It's a non-ending cycle, because I still encounter professors who try to make me feel as though my career path isn't for me. Or peers that feel as though they're better than I am. It's a frustrating battle to constantly have to make sure my life is going exactly how I planned. Of course, nothing is perfect and I can't control everything. But why not fight for what I want? I can proudly say that I'm so sure of where I want to go, that I can literally feel it on the tips of my fingers. Not saying that I don't want to give up and sleep instead of study, or hang out with my friends, because one time won't hurt. But then, I can't help but fast forward four years in my head. Just thinking about how that one time did hurt pulls me back into reality, and to the next step I must take.
I know that not everyone knows what they want, and how they're going to get it. But I believe that it starts with fighting. Preparing yourself to fight against anyone and anything that tries to hold you back. Someone once told me, "Once you learn how to fight and stand up for what you want against your family; you'd be able to stand up against anyone and fight because they won't mean anything to you." Learning how to fight for what you want, whether big or small, will prepare you for anything that tries to stop you.
Some people might say that they're just not that type of person. Then I ask, 'don't you want to be someone that no one can stop from progressing to your dreams?' Isn't there something you want so much, that you're willing to give up everything for it? When is it okay to fight? Is it when everything is already in the process of being taken from you? Because that's when people usually fight -- when you start losing.
Realistically, the fight starts when you want something. From there, you should never stop fighting, because there's always something bigger and better. When you want to achieve a goal, you fight from the beginning to the end making sure you get to the goal. Maybe somewhere in between, you have to fight a little harder. But the fight never stops. All you have to figure out is, 'what are you fighting for?'
