What Your New Year's Resolutions Should Be

Whether you got that kiss at midnight or not, everyone should strive for these five resolutions.

What Your New Year's Resolutions Should Be
The Huffington Post

Happy New Year! It is that time of year again to make unrealistic, and sometimes even unachievable resolutions. Whether it be joining your local gym or cutting back on sweets everyone is preparing for a happier and healthier 2017. So why do we all go to the trouble to create these resolutions that we know, deep down inside, we will most likely abandon by the end of January? Why don't we make resolutions that will not only benefit ourselves, but those around us as well? For 2017, here are some new resolutions that we should all consider to have a happier and more positive world.

"Be kind to one another" -Ellen Degeneres

It's 2017 people. You would think by now that the golden rule, treat others the way you want to be treated, would be respected and encouraged. As an avid Ellen Show watcher and fan of the inspirational woman herself, I have a great appreciation for her famous line that she ends every show with and believe that more people should strive to start being nicer to others.

Start switching "I'm sorry" to "Thank you"

I came across this post on Facebook the other day, and it spoke volumes. Personally, I'm the kind of person who is constantly apologizing even if there is nothing I really have to apologize for. Having the positive mindset to say "thank you" more often than "I'm sorry" can make a difference in anyone's "new year new me" attitude.

Do something nice for someone

We all have so much free time on our hands to do things like tweet and snapchat. Opening a door for someone struggling with their bags, waiting that extra second to hold the door for someone walking behind you on a cold day, or you can even go above and beyond and volunteer some time at a food kitchen or homeless shelter.

Call your relatives

Anyone who has spent at least one semester at college will understand this resolution all too well. Yes, your grandparents do miss you and want to hear your voice. Your aunt who just sent you a nice care package or a card "just because" deserves more than a thank you text with some cute emojis.

"Be who you are and be that well" -St. Francis deSales

All DeSales students know this saying too well, it has even been engraved into our heads. I think this quote is important for anyone who wants to be more positive and truly exceed any expectations one has for oneself. Set the bar high and know that you were born for higher things. Do the things in your life that will make you happy and don't always look to make those around you happy. Sometimes it is ok to be a little selfish and put yourself first.

So for all of you still contemplating what your new year's resolutions should be, please consider these five to add to your list. Sure it would be great to actually join the gym and actually go every once in a while, but it can't hurt to do something realistic and positive for not only yourself but those who surround you every day.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
