Have any of you felt the urge to go on a health kick, cleanse or anything of the sort? Well, my friend and I wanted to get our health on, but not as extreme as 'Eat, Pray, Love' or as drastic as 'Cross Fit'. We just wanted to make our bodies feel good while getting a 'sort-of' work out. This lead to devising up our own form of fitness for the day, which ended in us going going on a hike through one of the many mountainous regions in the Los Angeles area. But, this is going to take a turn from what you think I'm going to be writing about. This is our story of what you should Not do while Hiking.
1. Do not hike if you haven't researched any information about the hikes.
We did not do our homework on the hikes in Griffith Park, which was
probably the worst thing we did to begin with. We just decided one day
we wanted to go on a hike, woke up and left. We had no idea where to
park because trying to find parking on a inclined and winding street
that you can't even call two lanes, was much harder than expected. We
also did not research any of the hikes because we should have started
with the easiest, instead of the most difficult.
2. Do not start hiking if you have no idea what you are getting yourself into.
We just so happened to start hiking up a mountain that was very deceiving because it started out super simple and we were impressed by our abilities. It was a rude awakening when it went from easy, to feeling like we were rock climbing. We would have turned around if we only knew, but we were too far gone. The only direction we could go was up.
3. Do not start asking random hikers for help.
We decided to
hike in Griffith Park to see the Hollywood sign. On several
occasions (because we didn't learn our lesson the first time) we asked hikers who seemed to be very experienced in which direction is Hollywood
sign was sitting. Safe to say, they starred at us and continued on
there way. This left us completely lost.
4. Do not go hiking by yourself.
Luckily
I was not alone, but if any of you are thinking of going alone, do not do it. It is always
safest to hike in a group of two or more. This is a precaution just in
case anything dangerous happens. In our case, two did not do just fine. Nothing serious happened, but at
one point the mountain seemed to be laughing at us. We ended up
finding ourselves loosing footing as we started sliding down the
mountain from the loose gravel.
5. Do not hike if you don't have the proper materials and clothing.
When hiking, you want to make sure you have all the proper materials
you would need for any sort of malfunction. You also have to make sure you are wearing the right clothing. We, however, forgot things like
sunscreen and hats. While it is supposed to be winter in LA, it was 75 degrees. So, you guessed it,
our skin and scalps are not very happy right now. However, we did plan
to wear leggings, which saved our butts from being scrapped and scarred.
We were just trying to look as much like experienced hikers as we could, when in all reality we were just two girls who just wanted to take one of those off-guard pictures with the Hollywood sign in the back. (Is that so much to ask for? The answer is Yes.) In spite of these set backs and epic fails, we never let any of it ruin our day. We were determined to make the most of every moment and now have a somewhat funny and embarrassing story to tell. That all being said, I think for now I am going to stick to watching Netflix and eating girl scout cookies.
