Writing is something I'm hugely passionate about. I live to write. Academically, it's been my strongest suit in school. It's allowed me to tackle large papers with ease and express fully the true extent of my understanding of the discussions in class. Creatively, writing has been the cause of a number of stories with in-depth detail, written in a poetic and raw fashion. The characters, backstories and plots become intricately in-depth. It's challenged me to push my boundaries and write almost every genre out there, and has inspired me to interconnect those stories into a much broader universe.
What I want to make aware with this article is how writing has helped me in the past and how it will continue to do so far into the future.
First, let's talk about the power of words themselves. Words are the center of our language. Without words, we cannot communicate in any way. We would no longer have any books to read or plays to watch or lyrical music to listen to. When writing, words are everything and they make a world of difference how they are used. In many cases, words can mean the difference between life and death; between someone having a good day and someone having the worst day of their life. Like a weapon or a tool, we need to understand the power words can have, the affect it can have on others, how to respect them and how to use them in the proper way.
Once I properly understood this, I was able to master it to use for my advantage when it came to various activities where I needed to write something.
When it came to schoolwork, specifically papers, it was a breeze for me. Most of the time, when working on a research paper, I was able to express what I learned from the class more than I ever could by simply speaking: My thoughts were pouring out onto the page perfectly recalling the lectures, the notes, the topic, etc. to satisfy requirements for the length of the paper. The only issue I had was having to find sources to quote, even though I understood the topic. Being a writer helped me learn and put my education to good use more than an exam or quiz or project ever could, because I was doing something that came naturally to me, showing what I learned and expressing it freely without too much restriction. The results of these papers were always in the high B or A range, as well.
When writing creatively, I'm able to express myself in more ways than I could even imagine. I'm able to create these worlds and characters I can call my own. Much like an artist who takes time and energy into creating something beautiful, I too, have to put time and effort into artistically describing everything; I need to creatively describe the scenery in every setting. I need to poetically detail a character with all of their flaws, strengths and other unique characteristics. And I need to intricately blend the plot and every single character together to create an interesting narrative someone would be willing to read.
On top of this, I've been confident enough to participate in a writing challenge called National Novel Writing Month, or NaNo WriMo for short. It's a challenge to complete a 50,000 word story within one month's time. And for the past two years, I've been successful.
Writing is essential and in its own way, it's a form of art that, when mastered, can be impressively used.
