As I look back on my elementary school self, I think about the simplicity of life. I had only menial chores as my responsibilities, along with simple and quick homework assignments. My toughest decisions included deciding whether or not I wanted to play with chalk or with swing on the swing set.
In elementary school, I did not have a cell phone and I was only allowed on the computer for about an hour a day. While I was on the computer I would either be playing Club Penguin or Lizzie McGuire Racing on disneychannel.com. There was no social media to obsess over and kids actually played outside.
Today, I look around and almost everyone is scrolling through their Instagram of Facebook feed, and even though I wish it wasn't true, I am just as guilty of it. People meet each other for lunch and sit there on their phones. But this has become the norm.
And I have to wonder, what if cell phones never existed? We would have to call each other's house phones if we wanted to just talk to our friends. We would go out and enjoy nature rather than going out, snapping a picture of a pretty scene, and uploading it to every social media account we own. Cyber-bullying would be much less prevalent, and it is so sad to know how much of a problem it has become.
We hide behind our tiny little screens and try to live our lives through our Facebook statuses, tweets, and latest Instagram posts. Without them, we would have to actually go out and get to know people rather than creeping their social media accounts. Why are we so focused on having "artsy" or "cool" social media accounts when we should just be living our lives?
Oops, my hour on the computer is almost up. Time to go outside and draw pictures with chalk. Maybe I'll Instagram them when I'm done...
