- Be kind to everyone, you never know who your next best friend will be.
Yes, even the weird kid in your dorm, especially him. - Your professors are really cool humans, and if you have a small classroom, getting to know them on a personal level will affect your life deeply, as well as guarantee a good reference later on.
- It doesn't help anyone to compare yourself to the other freshmen who are "having the time of their life" while you seem to be spiraling into loneliness. Just remember- you are not alone in what you are feeling, and things do get better.
- If you see someone that you think seems cool and worth your time, go introduce yourself. Once again, you never know who your next best friend will be.
Most of the time, they will be open and friendly. (note: It's always easy to set up a lunch date since swipes are ample your freshman year) - This is the year you really find yourself, so don't ignore how you are really feeling. Listen to yourself, ask yourself what you want, and follow the light it creates.
- When (this is definitely not an if) the dynamics of your high school friend group begin to change, don't worry or feel like you're the only one who's been there. Be aware: it is going to feel weird and sad at first, but if it is a true friendship, you will be able to navigate the rough waters of long-distance friendship after the first few rocky months.
- For those who are embarking into long distance relationships, be strong and be brave. It may end up making the two of you even better together. However, it may not work out, and it's okay. You are attempting a very challenging feat, and I (along with many others who have gone through long distance) applaud you. Fight for it as long as it still seems worth it.
- Try to get involved on campus, or find a job with the type of community which you get along with. Finding a safe space outside of the dorm and classroom is a wonderful way to feel balanced and secure.
- It's definitely okay to feel homesick. It's also okay to never want to go back. You will find a healthy outlook on it all after a few months either way.
- Always remember, you're definitely not the only one learning this new walk of life. Embrace the stage you're in, and have fun! This is the beginning of some of the most exciting, happiest, and defining years of your life.
