Dear Younger Self, Everything Will Get Better

A few pieces of advice for my younger self.

Dear Younger Self, Everything Will Get Better
Brianna Lahoud

We've all experienced the feeling of wishing we could communicate with our younger selves. We could warn ourselves about the first day of high school or middle school, tell ourselves to not get colored bands for our braces because, contrary to the once popular belief, it isn't cute. There are a few more things I wish I could tell my younger self, too, that are a little more serious.

I would tell myself that everything does get better. I know that sometimes it may feel like the world is literally falling in on itself, but I promise there will be brighter days. One bad day or week won't ruin the rest of your life, even if it seems like life as you know it is over. Life is meant to challenge you and send some unexpected twists and turns your way; those are the most vital lessons. Just because it seems like everyone else has a great life, truth is, they're probably struggling too. Take time and make sure to be kind to everyone, you truly don't know what is going on in their lives. Be the kind of person you would want to comfort you when it feels like everything is crashing down on you.

Do what you want. Obviously, not everything, because you always seem to have the craziest ideas. But if you truly feel passionate about something, just try it out. There is no harm in doing things that not everyone else is doing: if you like it, it may change your life for the better. And if what you try happens to be not your cup of tea, hey, at least you tried. It's always better to do something and decide to not pursue it than to look back and wish you could have tried it.

You'll be fine, I promise. Don't forget who your true friends are and always keep your family close. It'll all be okay, I promise.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
