Summer is one of my favorite seasons. The weather is warmer, the stress of exams are away and it's a great time to boost your resume skills.

If you are like me or most college students, you are surrounded by friends and colleagues studying abroad and/or getting a summer job or internship. But what about the students who go home for the summer or who couldn't get an opportunity like that?

If you did not land a job or internship this summer, this is the article for you! You don't always need a fancy title to steal the show. Consider the following:

Volunteer

Volunteering for the most part is unpaid work done out of the kindness of your heart. It can also be a great chance to do some good for your resume. A great way to take advantage of your volunteer work is by counting how many hours you have contributed, including your daily tasks as a volunteer and working for a cause you are passionate about. Working for something you are passionate about shows dedication to employers and that you have an interest outside of the field.

Get A Mentor

Reach out to someone who is in the field you want to be in and ask if you can pick their brain for a bit. Not only will you be getting insight into the professional world, but you might even gain a lifelong friend. Fun fact: Many of the mentors you gain have had mentors and know exactly what you're going through.

Don't be Jealous of Someone Who Did Get a Job/ Internship

It's easy to become envious of someone else getting an opportunity while you did not. This may be a time where you are surrounded by social media posts about "first days" and "I accomplished this as an intern" posts. It happens. But instead of being upset, be congratulatory. Much like having a mentor, use that friend as a guide to the real world. Ask if you could take a peek at their resume or if they can offer some assistance to yours. Unlike your mentor, your friend or colleague's experiences will more likely be recent so ask questions and don't burn bridges.

Learn a Skill

Learn a skill and add that to your resume. Become familiar with tools that are commonly used for an internship that you would want to attain. Websites like Lynda.com and even Youtube are great online resources to learn if you have enough free time.

Summer School

If you are financially set enough to attend summer school, by all means try it! Although it's "extra school." it's a great time to get ahead and stay on track for graduation. Take courses you were unable to register for in the fall/spring semester or subjects you are especially not good at. This way you will have more time dedicated to focusing on your courses.

So now that you know the not-so-secret secrets of making yourself professionally stand out during vacation, I highly encourage you to try them out! College is short so gain some experience and do all you can, while you can.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
