What NOT To Pack For College

Because You Don't Need Everything...

Well it's that time again...back to school/college! You see the back to school commercials and school supplies on display at the grocery store and you start to think *hmm, maybe I should be packing?* Your immediately go online and search "What to pack for college" and a list about 100 things pop up. Speaking from experience I've packed a lot of things I needed and things that collected dust in my closet freshman year of college.

1. An Ironing Board

You barely have enough time to finish that research paper... you really think you're going to fold all of your clothes let alone iron them? No way. Skip the iron and next time when you're doing your laundry, dry your clothes in the dryer for an extra 20 minutes, then immediately fold them. It gets most of the wrinkles out and plus you don't have to worry about getting caught by your RA for having a fire hazard in your room.

2. Heels/Stilettos

Ladies, this one's for you! I've seen so many girls (95% freshmen) pack about 5 different pairs of heels for parties. What ends up happening is most of us (myself included) do not know how to gracefully walk in heels. So when you get an invite to that frat party 10 blocks away, skip the heels and wear flats. Trust me, no one will care and you'll be more comfy.

3. Computer Lock

When I was packing for college my first time, I read many stories about theft in dorm rooms. I immediately went overboard and bought a lock for my laptop so it couldn't leave my desk. I have never used it to this day. That's $29.99 i'll never get back. *sigh* Yes, be cautious with your valuables (i.e. laptop, iPhone, iPad) but they're perfectly safe in your room.

4. Fancy Clothes

Unless you are part of athletics at your school and have an awards night, you will never wear that super fancy dress that you packed. Instead, pack a few little black dresses that you can dress up or down. You'll save time and energy and won't have to worry about getting that $200 dress ruined.

5. Workout Gear

Even if you're part of athletics at your school, every school has a gym and is fully stocked with equipment. Those weights in your room are just going to collect dust. Worried about gaining the freshman 15? Go to the gym once per week in the morning or mid-day. It's likely to be empty and you'll have full usage of the equipment.

Packing for college is overwhelming and takes a lot of time. Just think of what you really need and are going to use as opposed to what you "think" you need. Just remember, you can always go back home and bring back what you don't pack. Happy packing, everyone!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
