Those typical family member occurrences and roles we all notice

What To Expect At Family Gatherings

This past weekend was the notorious holiday Easter; the oldest festival of the Christian Church which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Oddly, it seemed as though it came quite early this year and a lot of people seemed to forget about it because it usually falls around early-mid April. Nevertheless, it still came and with it came the crazy family gathering that I’m sure you all look forward to every year. Over the years I have noticed that with every family gathering has come certain occurrences and traditions. Yes, every family is different and can come in many different shapes and sizes, though I think in every family people tend to take on certain roles and talk/argue about the same things every year. So here are some things that I have noticed in mine and other families, and maybe you have noticed yourself over the years.

The first thing I have noticed is certain family members tend to take on certain roles or parts, whether they try to or realize it themselves. For example, everyone has that one chatty aunt that likes to know the latest gossip and know what’s going on in everyone’s lives. Or the loud uncle who always has the funniest and craziest stories that you look forward to every gathering. The fun cousin that always slips you a little extra wine at the table and tells you about their wild college years. The sweet grandma that makes the best food that brings the whole family together. Then the quiet grandpa who never has to say much, but you always know what he’s thinking. Either way we all have them. We all have those typical family members that we always know what to expect from them, but we love them anyways.

Something else I have noticed is the type of conversation and relationships certain family members tend to have. The dads and uncles always seems to form around the grill or television and talk about sports, or the most recent rub they’ve made for their steaks. The moms and aunts always catch up on the latest gossip or talk about that new boutique that opened up down town. Then there are the cousins that catch up on their crazy lives that are just beginning, or the funniest YouTube video online. Though there is always a bit of competition in the air. Families do love each other and usually do wish the best for another, but there is always a little competition. Competition on who is the most successful, has the smartest kids, or the best lawn. Some people hate to admit it, but let’s be real, it’s true. It’s alright though because a little healthy competition can be good for the soul. Just don’t let it consume or take over your family to much. Either way, there is always going to be lots of talking, catching up, yelling and arguing; but that is what family gatherings are all about.

So, what kind of traditions does your family have for Easter? Do you go to the early Sunday service, then brunch? Travel somewhere warm? Or just go to a nice restaurant instead of eating in? No matter what they might be, or where it takes place, traditions are always sacred and special. Time with your family is something you should never take for granted. Because with every holiday or time spent with your family more memories and traditions are made. Next time you’re with your family, take a moment to look around and see if you notice these common occurrences and the different roles people play. Everyone might be a little loud, crazy, and have a bit too much wine at times, but they are your family and you wouldn’t have them any other way. For that, you should feel forever thankful for these crazy family gatherings.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
