We all know that college is something to look forward to, especially if it means you get to move far away from your home. At first, you might think that it’s going to be awesome that you finally can live on your own and do whatever you want to do; you’ll say that you won’t get homesick at all and that college is the opportunity to get away from your family.
At least, that's how I felt all throughout summer. However, just a few months into the new school year, you find yourself suddenly sad because you actually are starting to miss your family no matter how much they can drive you mad. You become jealous of those who are able to go home every week or every day because they live no longer than an hour away (or less) while it would take you over five hours or more to even get to your state.
It can be difficult, but it doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world. There are things that you can do to help with being homesick. I’m from Maine and the only time I'll get to to see my family is during holiday break, which is like four times a year (counting summer break). What I do that helps me whenever I feel homesick is to call or FaceTime my parents about once a week or maybe more. This helps me a lot and I just look on the bright side of things like knowing that I'll be able to see them soon.
I know it can be difficult not being so close to home, especially if this is the very first time that you’ve ever been away from home; but if you distract yourself and surround yourself with some great friends, then before you know it, you’ll be back at home. Just remember to try to make the time to contact your parents. You’ll feel better and they'll like knowing that you’re taking the time to talk to them because they miss you just as much as you miss them. College is all about experiences and learning new things. Things will get easier for you as the time goes by if you don't let it get to you.
