What To Do When Your BFF Isn't Home For The Summer Yet

Those days waiting for your best friend to get home from college are rough.

Disclaimer: This is a list of things that I do, but I’m pretty sure my friends do the same thing while they wait for me to get home. 100% positive.

For most college students, our exams are over (or nearly over) and it’s glorious. All that’s left to do now is to pack up our U-Hauls (because our stuff somehow expanded over the course of the year and now it won’t all fit in the back of the family SUV) and head home. Pulling into your driveway fills you with a sense of euphoria. There’s no more classes to take, no more papers to write—you can practically taste the freedom. Yet as you sit in your room surrounded by stacks of boxes containing more sweaters than you knew you even owned, the reality of your situation begins to sink in. Because it’s at that moment you remember: Your best friend isn’t home yet. So in order to help you get the most out of your waiting experience, I’ve compiled a list of things to do while you wait for your BFF to get home and complete you.

  1. Ride out the last of your “I’m finally done with school for the summer!” high.
  2. Sulk around the house because you realize you don’t have anyone to celebrate this achievement with yet.
  3. Text your friend to tell her you miss her and that she needs to come home.
  4. Continue sulking.
  5. Try to unpack, but get distracted by your friend’s funny Snapchats.
  6. Send your friend a Snapchat with every filter available.
  7. Compulsively check your Snapchat to see if you missed a filter because you were positive there was one more.
  8. Distract your friend while she’s studying for exams by FaceTiming with her for hours.
  9. When she insists that she doesn’t have time to FaceTime, bombard her with Facebook messages until she responds.
  10. Roll around on the floor in a fit of loneliness-induced agony when your friend doesn’t respond to your texts right away.
  11. Watch New Girl or Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt to try and laugh away your loneliness. (Spoiler alert—this will not work)
  12. Scroll through old Facebook pictures of you and your friend and smile wistfully.
  13. Find the most embarrassing pictures of your friend that exist and send them all to your friend without preface or context.
  14. Bake brownies.
  15. Bake cookies.
  16. Try to eat away your loneliness.
  17. Calculate exactly how long it will be before your friend gets home, right down to the minute.
  18. Pace back and forth in front of the door for hours.
  19. Make a Spotify playlist of sad songs and listen to them while staring out the window.
  20. GO GREET YOUR FRIEND BECAUSE SHE’S FINALLY HOME!

And then, finally…

I know it seems like once you get to college everyone kind of discounts any friends you might’ve had before, but I want to remind those people that some friendships are so special, going to school in separate states won’t weaken your bond. So here’s to those friends that got me through high school and made everything from grocery store runs to history class some of the most hilariously fun times of my life—you guys are worth waiting for.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
