Having nothing to do once in a while is very much appreciated, but going days with nothing planned can drive someone crazy. We can expect, as adults with unfortunate responsibilities, that while we are sitting around wondering what to do today, our friends are busy with their own lives, so “hanging with the buddies” is not so easy anymore.

Nowadays, the time we have laying around can’t be filled with a simple call to a friend. There comes a time when you have to find out how you want to spend your free time, and alone.

So with the intentions of not feeling like a useless son of a gun taking up all the needed space in the world, here are five things to keep you busy and you don’t need to call a friend to keep you company.

1. Get the blood flowing

Sometimes having a workout buddy is a nice source of motivation, other times you find yourself talking more than running. Instead of having a friend workout with you, why not go alone? Spend some time outside or at the gym alone and get a serious workout in.

2. Educate yourself about something new

Read a book, search the web, or watch an interesting documentary. Whatever it is it’s never too late to learn something new. We always have room in that head of our to learn about the latest medical discovery or any factual information.

3. Make an effort to call your parents

When was the last time you gave your parents a call? Today, the day you just so happen to have nothing to do, is the best day to give the old man a call. Or better yet, if they live close by why not visit? When life gets a bit busy, getting in touch with your parents can be hard but on “nothing to do” days, that is the time to catch up. Make sure they know you haven’t forgotten about them.

4. Cook a meal you have never made before

Tired of having the same old spaghetti and meatballs? Try something new! Search the web for a dish you can’t even pronounce and get cooking! You may need to make a run to the grocery store, but that is all part of the fun.

5. Volunteer within your community

Why not stop by the Boys and Girls Club or your local church and see if there is any need for help? Giving back to the community is a great way to keep yourself busy and do something good.

You will have those days when you have nothing planned and no one to accompany you. But these five things give you something to do that won't be a waste of time and are beneficial for you and others. Take this day as a day to focus on yourself and do things that will make you happy and possibly other people happy too.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
