What To Do In Austin In One Weekend

Let the weekend commence.

In honor of going to Austin this past weekend, I’ve compiled a list of what to do and see in Austin for first-time visitors. The scorching Texas heat is bearable when you’re in a city as interesting and eccentric as Austin. Take in all the hippie power and walk around, there’s much to see in this one-of-a-kind city.

1. The 360 Bridge

Hike up to the overlook and take in the view of Lake Austin and the 360 Bridge, an Austin symbol. Park close by, take a brisk short hike, and appreciate the nature and view of the shimmering lake and lush greenery surrounding the city. Definitely take some Instagram worthy shots up here.

2. SoCo

The first place I visited in Austin was SoCo, otherwise known as South Congress, where a long strip of thrift stores, quirky clothing shops and restaurants stretch for a mile or so. SoCo attracts a scene of delighted tourists and locals every day. If you don’t mind a long wait, definitely go to Hopdoddy’s for the best burger you’ll ever have. Maybe you want to thrift or find all-black apparel? There’s a store in SoCo specifically for those who love all and only black apparel. There are also pottery and jewelry stores, and my favorite would be the weird knickknack and vintage store full of random items from all different time periods. Whatever you’re looking for, there’s something for everybody at SoCo.

3. Juiceland

Personally, I love vegetarian food. I’m not vegetarian, but finding a variety of plant-based meals is always awesome. Vegetarians go nuts for Austin; there truly is something for everyone – vegans, carnivores, vegetarians – whatever you prefer, it’s there! Hit up Juiceland for a wide array of various juices and smoothies. You can even add almond butter, peanut butter, and shots of other healthy ingredients to your smoothie/juice.

4. Graffiti parks

After purchasing your $9 smoothie (worth it), take a ride around town and find graffiti that truly reflects the eccentricity of Austin. There’s lots of graffiti in SoCo, but my favorite place for legit graffiti is HOPE Outdoor Gallery, a mountain of inspiring quotes, animations and colorful graffiti signs. The gallery is located right in downtown Austin, so climb to the top for a fantastic view of the city skyline. HOPE is different because individuals can spray paint and create their own graffiti, so it’s always changing with current events, pictures and phrases relevant to the people who visit the gallery.

5. Sixth Street or "Dirty 6th"

If you’re familiar with Bourbon Street in New Orleans, that’s pretty much what Sixth Street is to Austin. Take a night out on the town and be as touristy as you can get bar hopping along Sixth Street. As the night goes on, Sixth Street gets crazier, but don't let the night slip away so easily. Make sure to check out all the quirky shops and restaurants in between the party bar hopping.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
