I will never forget the magic of waking up before the crack of dawn on Christmas morning and running downstair to see what Santa left me for the year. Then came the sorting of presents from under the tree and taking turns to see what we all decided to give for the year. The day would be full of figuring out which new sweater to wear, which toy to open first, and a nice dinner with a loving family. At the end of the day I would go to bed wishing that Christmas would never end.
Although I still have the spirit of the holidays, a lot has changed since I have grown older. I do not want the new Barbie Dream House for Christmas anymore and I would rather have the beauty sleep on Christmas eve and enjoy my coffee in the morning before distributing presents. But let's be honest, none of this is truly what the holidays is about. Here are some things that have changed for me since coming to college.
Gifts Don't Matter
It does not matter what is wrapped up in the pretty little package under the tree...what matters to me is that someone thought about me and took the time to do something nice. What matters is getting to spend the holidays around the people you cherish the most.
Celebrating Different Cultures
Although I am Christian, I love being on a campus that has so much diversity. I have been able to learn about what other cultures celebrate during the holiday season which has made this season merrier.
Focusing on the Little Things
My mom has always had a tradition of buying my sister and I an ornament to commemorate the year starting from our first Christmas. I love to look at the tree when it is lit up at night and reflect back on all the memories I have throughout the years because of the ornaments. It is the little things like this that make the holidays a little more meaningful.
Having Christmas for your Pets
Obviously, our animals are a part of our family, so they participate in the festivities of the holidays, too! One of my favorite parts of Christmas is watching my cats and dogs go crazy over all of the wrapping paper on the floor. It entertains them for hours and their happiness with cheap wrapping paper is probably the best gift you could ever give them.
Family
This one might seem like a no-brainer, but it's true. The holiday season would be nothing without the people who love you the most.I love spending the whole day with my family and reflecting on all the blessings that have come our way.
No matter what you may celebrate, have a happy holiday season!
