As every 90’s kid knows some of the best TV came on after school on Nick or Cartoon Network. Personally, one of my favorites happened to be "SpongeBob." The yellow square sponge that resided in Bikini Bottom had a lot to tell his young audience. Alongside his best friend, Patrick Star and his favorite co-worker, Squidward Tentacles, they have adventures that teach kids about friendship, love, and compassion.
"F is for friends who do stuff together, U is for you and me, N is for anytime and anytime at all." This is a popular song that the young sponge preaches, and it is the right message to teach little kids. Right after school I would come home and plop my butt on the couch and watch some good old fashion television. "SpongeBob" taught me the importance of friendship in various ways. That fun song was a great way to do it, but there are countless other examples. For instance when SpongeBob came down with an illness, friends Patrick and Sandy Cheeks, raced over to his side to take him to the doctor’s office. It teaches young kids to be there for their friends and that friendship might be your greatest asset.
Another great lesson it teaches is love. Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob’s employer at the Krusty Krab is a cheap old crab with a whale for a daughter named Pearl. Pearl is a sweet young girl who has a ton of friends and never really asks for much. There is an episode in which she requests a birthday party from her father and he follows through. Though it is a “cheap” party he does it for his little girl.
SpongeBob is also compassionate toward his pet snail, Gary. There are countless examples of SpongeBob risking his safety for Gary. He loves his snail, just like humans love their pets. It is actually quite touching.
The final lesson that SpongeBob is a great teacher of is compassion. His favorite superhero duo is Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. The duo fight foes such as the dirty bubble and Manray. One of the best memories of SpongeBob I have is when he tries to teach Manray to be good and by my standards he was successful. Manray gave up on his evil ways in favor of being a good guy with puppies on his checks. SpongeBob 1, Manray 0. Winner SpongeBob.
If I learned anything from TV, "SpongeBob" taught it to me. I wouldn’t want it any other way.
