What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about San Diego State University? Parties? Fraternities? Sororities? An endless amount of fun?
That’s what most people would say, but not me. It absolutely gets under my skin when I tell people that I go to SDSU and they respond along the lines of, “Oh that’s a party school.” I totally disagree with that statement. San Diego State means so much more to me than parties and alcohol. SDSU is home for me, and I feel like when I am in San Diego, I am at ease and like where I belong.
San
Diego State has such a diverse culture, mostly because many people attend
school there. It is so important to reach outside your comfort zone and be
around people who are different from you and from different cultures
and backgrounds. You get to see things that you wouldn’t
normally see and that expands your personal view of the world. This is an idea that often gets left in the dust because most people don’t see its
importance in society as much as I do. Going to SDSU definitely fulfills
that want and need for me. You can't go 10 steps without hearing someone speak
a different language or seeing someone wear something that isn’t so traditional to American culture.
SDSU
also symbolizes opportunity. There are so many things to get involved
with besides Greek life. You can join a club, join the many athletic
teams our school offers, or you can even start your own club or
team. On this campus, you have the liberty to do whatever makes you happy (within reason). College is the time to grow up
and discover the world and yourself.
I
have never been happier since I moved to San Diego State, and I think that it is because
I really do believe that you can accomplish so many things in the amount of time
that you are here, solely from experiencing all SDSU has to offer. The next
time someone asks you what you think about SDSU, don’t just think of it as a
school for hard core party people. There are way more positive things that SDSU has to offer than that.
