Disclaimer: I have done every single thing on this list.
Social media has caused a definite increase in pressure to have fun and receive attention among our generation. Likes and views have become currency for self-validation. Everyone has to look as fun as everyone else, or as funny, or as smart; the list goes on. Here’s what you and your friends actually mean when they post any of the following…
Twitter:
What you wrote: “Cuz darling I’m a nightmare, dressed like a daydream.”
What you actually meant: I am actually just a nightmare. I believe that looks make up for having a terrible personality. Alternatively, "Black Space" is just really, really stuck in my head, and I hope tweeting its lyrics will purge your soul of Taylor Swift’s catchiness. In which case, I feel you.
What you wrote: “Omg, the gym is so crowded at this time of day, it really sucks.”
What you actually meant: This is a classic example of a #humblebrag. Guys, I went to the gym, see?
What you wrote: *picture of Katy Perry’s flame costume from the Super Bowl* “Why is Katy Perry wearing my mixtape tho”
What you actually meant: I absolutely do not have a mixtape. I have never even attempted to rap in public. I try to follow current Internet trends, with mildly humorous results.
Instagram:
What you posted: A selfie with the caption #20beautifulwomen
What you actually meant: This challenge is SUCH a great excuse to post a selfie. I’ve wanted to post one for a while, but was too cautious.
What you posted: A picture of you and your friends on the beach, captioned: “I’m just really missing summer,” with a few sun and wave emojis.
What you actually meant: I look really good in this photo, and everyone knows summer photos are better than winter.
What you posted: A group photo of you and your bros, holding solo cups, set in front of a pong room backdrop. Caption: “Squad” or some rap lyrics.
What you actually meant: Did you know we party? Also, there’s no social media rules like there are for sororities, so we can pretty much post whatever we want.
Snapchat:
What you posted: 10 seconds of a band playing in your favorite fraternity’s basement, interspersed with your best friends’ faces.
What you actually meant: I don’t regret going out! Watch me have fun! Wheeeee!
What you posted: A picture of a nice steak dinner or some sushi.
What you actually meant: I ball (on a budget, or my parents are in town).
What you posted: A video where you hit your friend on the forehead with your phone.
What you actually meant: I have legitimately no idea. Can someone explain this trend to me?
At the end of the day though, social media platforms are designed for you to choose how you want your presence to be perceived, and everyone likes to troll Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat when they’re bored. Keep on posting!
