My mother has always told me that friends are the sisters that God forgot to give us. Well when it comes to me and my best friend, this saying could not be more true. Most people end up losing their best friends once they go to college, but lucky for me I truly have a best friend for life.
Having your best friend from kindergarten in college is like having everything you have ever needed in life, and more, all rolled into one. She acts as your mother, your partner in crime, your personal stylist, and even a nurse on occasions. Your best friend will be the one to drag you out on a Friday night against your will but then be there to take care of you the next day when you are facing the consequences of that night out. She will praise you when you look good but not be afraid to let you know when you look bad. She will encourage you to go on a date with that cute guy from class but be there for you with chocolate and tissues if he breaks your heart.
Of course, in college, you and your best friend will make new friends as well but they all must accept that the two of you are a package deal. Your best friend’s friends will become your friends and vice versa yet none of them will ever know what you two are talking about when you mention that one crazy ex-boyfriend from high school, your favorite teacher from grade school, or that one train bridge from back home you used to hang out at when there was nothing else to do on a Saturday night.
In turn, this rule also goes for boyfriends too. When both you and your best friend have boyfriends it works out perfectly for double dates and then when you both are single you have the perfect wing woman. However when only one of the two of you is in a committed relationship, the other serves as a great third wheel to balance out the relationship. But honestly, let’s be real, when you go out with your best friend and your boyfriend who is more of the actual third wheel?
After almost 16 years of being friends, you are automatically adopted into your best friend’s family. You begin to refer to aunts and uncles as if they were your own and always assume you have an invitation to every family Christmas or Thanksgiving.
Thinking of trying to escape your past when going off to college? Well, you can try, but with your long-time best friend right there by your side, she will never ever let you live down any of your most embarrassing moments from kindergarten through high school. The positive side of this is that your best friend knows everything you have gone through and has most likely been right there by your side the whole time. From your greatest accomplishments to your worst nightmares coming true, you have always had and will always have her through it all.
From living across town from each other to now only living separated by a flight of stairs, I am so grateful that I have never had to know what it’s like to live away from my best friend.
