Hello! My name is Tara, and I'm a bad Christian.
No...
I'm a laid-back Christian.
Nope.
I'm an open-minded Christian.
OK. That works, right?
It's not that I lack enthusiasm. It's that I do not look anything like the image society has painted of Christians. I do not fit into that mold. I don't really fit into any mold.
I just know that I love Jesus. I'm trying to live my life in a way that is pleasing to Him. I want to be kind to everyone, help people and love them.
Guess what. I mess up... Every. Single. Day.
I have much to learn.
I'm still a Christian, nonetheless. I believe in Jesus Christ and his teachings.
I'm just an open-minded Christian and I'm not alone.
This is what we, unprejudiced and nonjudgmental Christians, want you to know:
There is not one true image of a Christian. We all come in different shapes and sizes. There are so many different denominations and beliefs. It's not fair or even rational to assume that we're all the same.
Jesus is crazy about us. Jesus is also crazy in love with you. He adores everyone. His perfect love has everything to do with Him and nothing, absolutely nothing to do with our own actions. He loves the sinners just as much as the saints.
Some of us are Democrats. Some are Republicans. The party in which we identify does not make us a better or worse Christian.
We are not Josh Duggar. We are not Kim Davis. But we do screw up. We sin every day just like everyone else in the world. We sin like all the other Christians.
We respect your beliefs. We respect your religion, whatever that may be. We respect the fact that some people do not have a religion. We would even love to have a discussion about what you believe.
We never want to shove our religion down your throat. But anytime you have a question about Jesus, we would be happy to talk about Him.
We do not hate you. We don't hate anyone. We don't hate you if you are a Muslim. We don't hate you if you are gay. We don't hate you if you are atheist. We don't hate you if you have had an abortion.
Some of us drink. And some of us choose not to drink. You might see us hanging at a bar either way.
We listen to rap music and pop music. We listen to music that cusses. Sometimes we even cuss, ourselves.
We wear short shorts and crop tops because we know that what we wear does not define who we are.
We do not believe that missing one church service is the end of the world. We know that you don't have to go to church at all to be a Christian. But we also know that plugging into a church is a really good idea.
We have to ask for forgiveness, probably a whole lot more than others.
We do not think we are superior to you.
We accept the fact that we won't always believe the same thing. We want to be friends anyway.
There are so many Christians who are fighting, hating and judging. That needs to stop. People are dragging our names through the mud, thanks to media's elaborated portrayal of the bad stuff.
That's not who we are.
Most importantly, we want you to know that we love you. We respect you. We don't have to agree on everything to love each other and be polite to one another.
