Lifting has always been a pastime of mine. It helps me clear my head, get out some anger and just makes me feel all-around 100 percent better.
I recently took my love of fitness to a new level by becoming a personal trainer where I primarily work with female clients who are looking to get stronger and faster.
Being a young woman who lifts is becoming more popular in the past 20 years. Women are beginning to stray from the "cardio bunny" aesthetic and are getting stronger, more toned and defined.
However, I am still always surprised by comments people make in regards to girls who lift, whether they are meant to be insensitive, rude or simply ignorant. So here are the worst things you can say to me or any other girl who lifts.
1. Don’t call us “Butch."
I have had the nickname for a very long time and have let it grow on me. Most other girls, however, do not feel the same way.
2. “Remember you still need to look like a lady.”
I have guy arms...I know. Some of us are simply defined. Just don't say this or anything that can be referenced to, "You look like a man." Just don't. It's rude.
3. “No guy wants a girl who looks that manly.”
Well, no one wants to date a guy who looks that feminine.
4. “Lifting heavy will make you look like a man."
5. “So how much weight have you lost?”
We don’t lose weight. We gain weight.
6. "Aren't you afraid you'll look bulky?"
You don't get bulky unless you try to bulk. We are getting toned and defined. Thank you.
7. "Don't you want to be skinny and feminine?"
Strong is the new sexy. Enough said.
8. "Are you sure you can lift that?"
Said random guys at the gym. Go away. Let us squat and leave us alone.
9. "Won't you get huge?"
Wrong. Lifting doesn't make you huge. Cupcakes make you huge.
So, to conclude, don't say these things. It's annoying AF. If you're saying them, then you probably don't even lift.
