The clock is finally winding down to the end of first semester and I’ve come to learn a lot about being a college student. It’s not easy learning how to be an adult and live on your own when you’ve spent the last 18 years having your mom cook meals and dad fix your lamp when it’s broken. But as time goes on, it’ll get easier. Here are some guidelines of things not do as a first year student.
Don’t pack your entire closet.
Although it may seem really tempting to bring every single pair of your favorite clothes and shoes to college with you, don’t due it. Even if you’re going out of state. The first reason is you don’t have much space in the first place. You’re sharing a small compact room with another person so you’re just creating more clutter with all the clothes that you won’t wear. So grab a couple pairs of your favorite shoes and save the rest for break. Also you can save from packing huge luggages for break.
Don’t be afraid to try new things.
College is all about trying new things. Don’t try to restrict yourself to all your hobbies from high school. Whether it was a single sport or club that you’re comfortable with try something new. Try the rugby team, chemistry club, or Greek life. Expand your horizons so that you’ll be able to grow as an individual.
Don’t procrastinate all the time.
Yes, there will be those times where you wait until the very last minute to finish that 10 page paper but don’t do it for every assignment. You think you have all the time in the world to do assignments that are due every other day, but time really does creep up on you.
Don’t hide in your dorm.
Instead of doing work in your room, try the library or a nearby coffee shop with a study group. It’ll be harder to transition and find your group of friends when you’re always sitting your room watching Netflix.
Don’t just stay on campus.
Explore your college town or city. There’s nothing better than bonding with new people through grabbing a bite at a restaurant downtown or going shopping. You’re bound to find something that’ll make you feel more at home.
Although there are way more don’ts than do's, I hope that this guideline inspires you to do a little more research before moving into the world of college.
