What Not To Do: New York City

You may be wasting a lot of your valuable time on common mistakes in the Big Apple.

What Not To Do: New York City

1. Transportation

Don't take taxis.
Do take the subway.

New York is infamous for the yellow taxis that you can catch everywhere, but they aren't your best bet for navigating the city. The New York subway system will get you to your destination much more quickly and cheaply. The map may seem intimidating and confusing at first, but familiarizing yourself with this system will be the best choice you make.

2. Times Square

Don't spend too much time in Times Square.
Do stop by to take a picture.

What would New York City be without the infamous Times Square? It is featured in a ton of movies and television shows, and millions tune in to watch the ball drop on New Year's Eve. Other than being iconic, it is nothing more than a tourist trap. It is crowded and expensive. Once you take your pictures of the neon signs and with the "Naked Cowboy" it's time to move along.

3. Winter activities

Don't go ice skating at Rockefeller Center.
Do go ice skating in Bryant Park.

If you're visiting the city around the winter holidays, it's probably on your list to stop by Rockefeller Center. The tree and the skating rink are definitely a stop you need to make to snap a picture, but don't stay. The skating rink is crowded, chaotic and expensive. Not too far away, among the skyscrapers of midtown is Bryant Park. This rink is much more causal, relaxing and enjoyable for the entire family. And it's free!

4. Bird's eye view

Don't go to the top of the Empire State Building.
Do go to the Top of The Rock.

The Empire State Building is world-famous and arguably the heart of New York City. If you have the time (and the money) to go up to the top of both, it is definitely worth it. However, if you're only looking to do one of the two, Top of The Rock is the way to go. Tickets to the top are cheaper than those for the Empire State Building, the wait is usually shorter, and the observation deck less crowded. Plus the view is spectacular and includes the Empire State Building and Central Park.

5. Explore

Don't spend all your time in Manhattan.
Do visit as many of the boroughs as you can.

New York City is more than just Manhattan. New York City also consists of Queens, Brooklyn, The Bronx and Staten Island. Each borough is unique and will bring something different to your visit. The zoos, stadiums and restaurants are waiting for you.

While in New York City be adventurous! See and try as much as you can. Get (somewhat) lost. If you disregard everything I say, please take this one piece of advice: don't eat at Sbarro like Michael Scott.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
