Mexico, our neighbor to the south, has been embattled with cartel violence and corruption in recent years. With a looming presidential election, how will each candidate tackle the countries economic woes and domestic crime.
Ricardo Anaya, who as of June 4th was in second place with 26 percent is a modernist conservative politician. His ambition has lead him to create many enemies and those who oppose him claim his possible criminal activities make him unqualified to lead the country out of domestic issues. He is currently under investigation for money laundering by both the Mexican and Spanish government.
The clear leader is Andrès Obrador. With 50 percent polling and the elder statesman persona, this two time runner up is in line for his chance to lead the Mexican people for the next 6 years. His campaign promises of economic reform and anti corruption measure surely resonate for the citizens.
Obrador who is commonly labeled as "ALMO", made world headlines for his proposal for cartel members and ending the war on drugs. This program is highly unlikely to work but it represents a change in thinking among the old guard.
One issue both candidates agree on is on President Trump's policies. Both have stated their disproval and will continue to persuade the government of the United States to change their tone regarding NAFTA and Border Security.
It is highly unlikely that either are the answer Mexico needs and deserves. With untapped economic potential and rapidly growing urbanization. The next president could usher in a new age for Mexico. Or give them the same old promises.
