What My High School Friends Taught Me

I had no idea people put lotion in their hair after straightening it!

What My High School Friends Taught Me
Nicole Sowards

When I was in high school, I had a group of friends that I did everything with. We shared lockers, we had playlists of "our songs", we took all of our classes together, and we spent all of our time with each other. We were extremely close, and even though I always heard about how you drift apart from your high school friends after graduation, I honestly didn't think that we would. We all had chosen colleges that were relatively close to our hometown, so I thought there would be no reason for us to not be friends once we started college.

Right after graduation, we got in a huge fight and I didn't talk to most of my friends for the whole summer. When we went to college, we apologized for the things we said in that fight but it didn't really matter. Things didn't magically go back to the way they were. Part of me thinks that it was inevitable, to drift apart from your high school friends. You go to different colleges and meet new people, and don't have as much in common. Even though I wouldn't consider most of them my close friends anymore, they used to be. I had a great high school experience because of them and all of the memories I have with them. I still care about all of them immensely, and I think of them every time I hear "Meet Me Halfway" by the Black Eyed Peas(and I probably always will). They taught me a lot throughout high school and the following things are just a few of the many many things I learned.

1. Running around outside when its snowing in a sports bra isn't actually as cold as you would think!

2. Chugging two cans of Pepsi at 2 in the morning can keep you awake for a couple of hours.

3. Cooking chicken alfredo is actually way harder than it seems.

4. You can watch Netflix in French and the teacher won't do anything about it.

5. You can also steal candy from your counselor every day and he won't care either.

6. It is possible to play Just Dance for hours and hours.

7. There is another person on earth that thinks Wiz Khalifa is hot!

8. There is also another person on earth who likes Panic! at the Disco as much as I do.

9. If you live around a bunch of trees in the middle of no where, there will be spiders on your porch.

10. It's never a bad time to blare One Direction .

11. It's acceptable to put lotion in your hair after you straighten it (I had no idea this was a thing until high school).

12. The best drink to get at Sonic is a watermelon Nerd slush.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
