According to Google, Millennials are the generation born from the 1980's to 2000. I am on the later end of this generation, being born in 1997. The word Millennial has created a bit of a negative connotation, especially recently. Here's what I believe it means to be a millennial in 2016.
Our world is evolving with technology more rapidly than ever before. The industrialization of America is on the downside and technology related fields are booming. I think there is something sentimental and classic about blue collar, industrial jobs and I admire all who have such positions. However, my generation is experiencing less and less of this and more of computerized jobs. Computers can do everything now. I can order a pizza, watch a movie, take a picture and Google a question all on my phone. 20 years ago one would need a different device to do each of these tasks.
With all of the new technology that our generation has been exposed to, we learn to adapt to new things very quickly. I have grown with the technology of my generation. I remember in 7th grade receiving my first cell phone. It wasn't touch screen, I couldn't Google anything on it and I didn't even have unlimited texting. Now I have an iPhone 6s, which can basically do every function that a computer can; all at the tips of my fingers. I think technology is the staple for the Millennial generation. We're basically living in the future. I'm still waiting on light sabers to be invented, though. (S/O to Generation X)
One thing Millennials get a bad wrap for is our lack of work ethic and a "not caring" attitude. We feel like we're entitled to something like the world owes us everything. The saying goes, "we're only promised death and taxes." Ah taxes, that's another thing my generation might not quite understand. See in 1776 the United States of America declared independence from England because THE TAXES WERE TOO HIGH. Now us Millennials want to elect a Socialist president, who promises to RAISE taxes by 13% or more. I wish we could just hit a refresh button and get a whole new batch of presidential candidates for 2016.
These are just a few of my thoughts on Millennials. I think a big reason why my generation has such a bad connotation is because we're still young and dumb. However, at the same time, the future is ours and now is the time for us to start molding that future into what we want it to be. I think we'll turn out alright. After all, the Jonas Brothers went to the Year 3000 and they said my great great great granddaughter is doing fine.
