Somewhere in between the generation before ours and our generation now, I believe the true meaning of love became lost somewhere. In relationships today, we see teenagers saying "I love you" after three weeks of being together, and then they're broken up a month later. That is not true love. That's just wanting to feel something in the moment, and it ends up hurting you in the end.
"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud." 1 Corinthians 13:4
To love someone means to act truly selflessly. You don't do something for them in order to get something back. You do it because you would give anything for that person.
When you love someone, you are patient. No matter how many times you want to strangle them for something they've done, you don't. You understand everyone will make mistakes, and you forgive, as Christ forgave us. When it comes to the person you love, you would wait an eternity.
Love is gentle. No matter how much you think your girlfriend or boyfriend loves you, if they speak to you or treat you with anything less than respect, kindness, and comfort, it's not true love.
Love is not envious. It does not get jealous of the other, because something great happened to them. If it's true love, they will lift you up even more. They will even give up their prized possession for you, as God gave up His child for us.
Being boastful or proud has nothing to do with love. Your love for each other does not have to be shown off. A true love will only want to be shared between two people, a bond that no one can break. God teaches us to be humble, to lessen ourselves, and to always put others first. This is the humbleness and love we should have towards another.
The world's definition of love is not true love. The world's definition of love is physical satisfaction. True love is way deeper than that. No matter what the world tells you, if your love does not follow this verse, it's not real love. To girls, no matter how many times your boyfriend tells you he'll love you and never leave you if you sleep with him, he wont. Love is patient. If he truly loves you, he will respect you enough to wait. To boys, no matter how many times she tells you she'll love you if you buy her that special something she wants so badly, she won't. Love is not proud. You shouldn't have to buy material items for someone's affection. You can't buy love. You can only earn it.
