We all have standards. Standards for ourselves, our friends, and our significant others. We have certain people that we think are good and certain people that we don’t. But there are some traits that are a no-go, a hard pass, especially when dealing with a significant other, and here they are.
1. Not wanting/liking pets
This irks me to no end. How can you not want a pet? Not a dog or a cat or a rabbit, or a rock? Animals and pets bring you so much joy and comfort that I can't imagine living without one so, to the guy I marry—we are having pets.
2. Spitting
When I see someone spit, even from the other side of the road, I want to run across lanes of traffic to smack them. If the person that I am dating is holding my hand and spits while we are strolling through the park, I might spit on them.
3. Not keeping up with grooming your eyebrows, beard, etc.
I love a guy with a beard. I think it gives a rough, rugged look to someone, but it needs to be kept up with. I can’t see myself dating Santa. Also, eyebrows are in the same realm. I don’t think that guys need to wax their eyebrows or have better arches than me, but the huge, out-of-this-world eyebrow, that is typical of an older man. These reasons can also be used for any other body hair that a person might have.
4. Not liking sports
Okay, maybe this one is more of a personal preference, but as much as I love sports, I would want my partner to like them too. I’m not saying that he needs to know every player of every sport, but having a favorite team and not minding going to games with me would be a plus.
5. Being rude to waiters and waitresses
I just don’t see the need in this. There is no reason to have negativity spewing from you so that a random person has to deal with your sass.
6. Being rude to your family
I dated a guy who would argue with everything my dad said. I don’t think that he meant it in a bad way, but that’s how it came off. There is no reason to argue or not ask to help with the dishes or say mean “jokes” to my sister. I guess this goes for their family too. I have always said that you should be with someone who respects their mom more than anything.
7. Being controlling or bossy
To be honest, this should have been number one on the list. I appreciate a guy looking out for me or making suggestions, but I don’t need you to order for me every time we go out and I don’t need you telling me that what I am doing is “wrong”—you’re not my dad. I don’t need you looking over my shoulder at who I text, getting mad at me for having to study instead of hanging out with you, or saying that if we get married it's "your house".There are a ton of other characteristics that make people ugly, or make them less approachable or not dateable, so these are just a few. Be nice, be kind, be genuine, and be the person that you would want to date. I don't want to end this on a cliche, but treat others how you want to be treated.
