What Is A Little?

Someone to teach the ropes, an young innocent soul with an unpredictable world ahead of her. But what is she once she's initiated?

What Is A Little?

Now that the glitter of big/little week has mostly found it ways off our floors, our sleep schedules have gotten as close to normal as they can get, and our littles have become the first tag Facebook suggests in all our photos, the question arises—what is a little for?

After loving my very busy and now newly-engaged big from afar, and not taking a little my first year, the big/little part of my sorority experience kind of took a back seat. So since I got the pride and joy of my life as a little this year, it's been a whirlwind of excitement leading up to initiation. But now what? What is my purpose in her life now that I have guided her through the new member process into fully initiated status? What is your little to you now that she's a sister?

Someone to drag to every Greek event
When I first joined my sorority, I didn't know how to get involved and was always a little too intimated to go to anything alone. Now I go to just about all of them. Whether it be philanthropy competitions, barbecues or watching intramural games, you can bet the first person I text to tag along is my little. Since I coordinate the teams to participate, she gets these texts a little more often than a normal little would, but hey what else is a big for? While she’s becoming more comfortable with the chapter, it can be really intimidating going to something like Pike Rodeo if you don’t know what it is. Like,  do they really have horses in a bar?

Your real Mountain Weekend date
While the cooler may say a boy’s name and be filled with his favorite drinks, let's face it, the real person you want to be shotgunning beside overlooking a scenic mountain scape is your little. As a big, you beg your date to find one more guy still needing an awesome date, because no one is cooler than your little and you can’t go anywhere off campus without her, especially the mountains. Plus she’ll need someone to teach her how to paint a cooler eventually.

Your new partner, for everything.
Whether it be Halloween costumes, someone to go downtown with any night of the week or a gym partner the week of functions, this new little of yours is about to become your ultimate sidekick. She’ll be sitting next to you at every football game, go to every concert and probably be standing next to you on your wedding day. No matter what it is, your little will become your buddy for everything. It can’t be said any better, she is the peanut to my butter, milk to my cookie and spring to my step; we’re always together and always will be whether we like it or not. She’ll also become your drinking date at every pregame, so just be prepared for how much she likes shots — and moonshine.

The “Real MVP”
When you need a pick-me-up coffee to get through a study crunch in the library, or someone to justify midnight Cookout runs, that little of yours is there, coffee and keys in hand. On gamedays, or really any day, you can be sure my little will be wrapped in a monogrammed apron cooking up the most delicious pumpkin pancakes, while pouring a morning mimosa to kickoff Saturdays in the SEC. Like I said, she's the real MVP; I wouldn't be able to do anything without her.

A little is something different to everyone, but to me, she’s the greatest girl to walk this earth, the reason I exist, and my legacy when I graduate and leave. Take her to everything and make her into everything you’d want to be remembered with. Be proud of the munchkin you are raising into a thriving young woman, since she’ll turn to you for guidance in every maturing step of the college experience.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
