I'm all about having different playlists for different moods, places and events. If you clicked on my Spotify you'd see just how OCD it can get. Plus, I like to just have a playlist for EVERYTHING. From “Acceptable Country" to “Myspace," there's a time and place for every genre of music. Here's your guide for knowing what to play and when (because we all know that having your phone on the speaker can be the scariest feeling).
- A day at the pool: This is the time to break out the classics. Think of the soundtrack to “Take Me Home Tonight" and grab some other songs such as “Come On Eileen." Other acceptable pool genres: country (but how cliché is that?), 90s alternative, and reggae.
- Pre-game: Your typical pre-game should have some super mainstream, rap songs of course, but then some good sing-a-long songs. “Sweet Caroline" is always a good one. And if it's a pre-game of just the girls, I would go with some classic Destiny's Child. I'd also recommend the song “Cheerleader" by Omi (Felix Jaehn remix).
- Falling asleep: Literally the only thing that comes to mind is Bon Iver. Or something like, Explosions in the Sky. Obviously anything that can't possibly give you a headache.
- Roadtrip: 90s alternative. You most likely know every word to every song, and who gets sick of Third Eye Blind and blink 182? Pretty guaranteed to keep you entertained behind the wheel.
- Beach day: Reggae is the cliché choice, but it probably works out the best. There's really nothing better than laying by the ocean and listening to some Rebelution, or something of the sort.
- Studying: Probably anything indie. Not so boring that you fall asleep, but not so upbeat that you can't focus. My study playlists are always my favorite.
- Reuniting with high school friends: Nothing other than the Myspace jams. Ranging from hellogoodbye to Sum 41, it's good to listen to old songs with good friends. Then even better to make fun of how emo some of us could be on Myspace (*cough* myself).
- Tailgating: Texas country is probably the best for this. Some Turnpike Troubadours and Parker McCollum provide the perfect vibe for being out in the heat before cheering on your favorite team.
- At a party: Probably a mix of anything upbeat listed above, but with more mainstream rap involved of course. For me, this is when it's just best for someone else to take over the Spotify.
Looking back and thinking about my college years thus far, there are so many different songs that remind me of specific events, and it makes me so happy. I love hearing some stupid, classic song, such as “Mambo No. 5" and thinking of my spring break trip to Destin, or hearing a Turnpike song and thinking of game day. Music can make so many memories, and that makes me the happiest.
