his spring break I decided to get away with some friends. We had hoped it would be warm in Asheville, North Carolina. It wasn't, but it was important to make the most of it.
A whole bunch of friends and I got an AirBnB (and I absolutely would recommend getting one over a hotel, always), and ended up in a yellow house in the mountains. The house, I think, was actually in a mountain. It was awesome. We grocery shopped and cooked most of our own meals - in turn saving money - and enjoyed the bitter cold weather.
Our first day there had a high of approximately 30 degrees Fahrenheit, and so we did the logical thing and went hiking. I have never been much of a hiker, but I enjoyed this. We did a quick 3 mile hike, and it was freezing, but it was fun!
One thing about Asheville that goes without saying is how great the COFFEE there is. I got the honor to go to Bred-Well Bakery in the Biltmore Village, BattleCat Coffee Bar which was extremely good and VERY grungy, and the AirBnB hostess left us with beans from Dynamite Coffee Roasters.
Now, I'm sure you've all noticed, but I love coffee. This trip was really just a testament as to how much coffee I could drink, and I think I surprised myself.
If you love nature, you should check out the Western North Carolina Nature Center. It was essentially a zoo of more obscure animals (wolves, coyotes, foxes, and bears). The admissions lady hooked us up with some discounts, and there were otters! I learned tons about the environment and the nature of the area, which I had known relatively little about.
It was so cold I had to wrap my face in my scarf!
Above all, I surprised myself this spring break. I learned how little I play well with others, but I also decided that I enjoy hiking, and nature, and the mountains. I climbed up Max Patch mountain, and although I didn't hike THAT FAR, I loved the little bit that I did hike, and the view was great. I actually shocked myself, and plan to go hiking again sometime soon.
