I think Mother's Day is looked at as more important than Father's Day. Although mothers are important (they gave birth to you!) fathers are just as important. They have an extremely important role. In honor of Father's Day coming up, i wanted to write about what I've learned from my own dad. I am extremely grateful to have him in my life, and i really need to tell him this more often. As much as he drives me crazy, I love him.
1. Family comes first.
Everything my dad does, he does for our family. He works to provide for our family. He buys things for our family. I see how much he cares for us. He always puts family first. He sacrificed a lot to give me and my siblings a better life. I completely appreciate everything he does. He made me realize that at the end of the day, family is the only earthly thing you can count on.
2. You can do anything you put your mind to.
My dad is as determined as the next person. I myself am like that partially because of my dad (also my mom). To him education is important, and he has instilled that in me and my siblings. He still has certain career goals to achieve. I can see the determination that he has. When he puts his mind to something, he achieves it. He's accomplished quite a bit in his life and I know that he will accomplish even more.
3. Always be respectful.
My dad is very stern, assertive, and tough. He is very stern with his kids because he wants us to be respectful. He doesn't play. As a father and in my Nigerian culture, respect is extremely valued. His intention is to never disrespect anyone and I have seen that in his actions. I have been taught my whole life that no matter what, the least you can do is show some respect.
4. Be selfless.
I have never told him this but my dad is the most selfless man I know on this earth. He is always willing to help anyone that needs it, regardless of how big or small the need is. He never thinks of himself first. In fact he puts his needs last. This is the biggest lesson that my dad has taught me. Through his actions, he shows me the importance of being selfless.
This upcoming Father's Day is a day to celebrate the dad(s) in your life, whether it's a biological day, step-dad, or a father figure. This is a day to celebrate all the great fathers in today's society because they are out there. On this Father's Day I want to celebrate the most selfless man I know.
