Yes, I've really been asked all of these questions.

Q&A: What It's Like To Be An Only Child
Liz Smorse

So many people have siblings. Brothers and sisters who they look up to or who they are able to be a role model to. Life without siblings is so sad and lonely. There's never anything to do, because the only friends you have are your parents. ...Or so people always assume. Being an only child is actually a normal thing, it’s literally just living life, without living with other kids around your age. Since people always ask me, I figured I’d give some insight into my life without the amazing presence of brothers and sisters!

1. “Wait, you really don’t have ANY siblings?”

No, I don’t have any siblings.

2. “So… what do you do … like, for fun? I would be so bored without my brother and sister!”

I do everything you do, except I do it without someone who is directly related to me. I watch Netflix and eat food, I go drive around my town. It’s possible to do these things with friends! Or even by yourself!

3. “Do you not ever go on family vacations then?”

I actually go on a lot of family vacations! I still have a family! It’s me, my mom and my dad.

4. “Since you don’t have siblings to fight with, do you always fight with your parents??”

No, I fight with my parents the normal amount that any teenager fights with their parents … probably less actually! I don’t have siblings to fight with which means I don’t have to complain to my parents about them … which means no arguing for me!

5. “Oh, you’re an only child … that means you’re really spoiled, right?”

Well, my parents only have to pay for things for one kid, not two, three or seven. So, I guess in that sense I don’t have to share with siblings. But every household is different, my parents could make less than yours so we could be “spoiled” the same amount if you have siblings to share with and I don’t. Or, my parents could make 10x as much as yours and I could be going on vacations every five minutes. You don’t know!

6. “What do you do for Christmas? Do your parents just stare at you while you open presents?”

I don’t understand this one, but I get it a lot. Do people not give their parents Christmas presents?? I always get my parents presents, they get each other presents, they get presents from their family members. …We all open presents! It’s Christmas!

7. "I'm so jealous! I wish I was an only child! Do you ever wish you had siblings?"

Honestly, sometimes I do wish I had siblings just so that people would not ask me all of these questions! It's really nice to be an only child and I wouldn't trade my life right now for anything.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
