What It's Like To Be Part Of The Biggest Rivalry In College Sports

You know which one I'm talking about. And if you don't, you aren't from around here. I'm talking about UNC vs. Duke. The good ole Tar Heels vs. Coach K's Blue Devils. While I am a student at UNC, I consider my position in the rivalry to be completely unbiased and fair. After all, Duke is arguably the most hated team in college sports. And here's what it's like to be the other (better) half of the rivalry.

1. You can literally feel when it's Game Day.

The energy is all over campus, everyone is wearing their school colors, and everyone's plans for the day revolve around one thing: the game.

2. Everyone gets tense when you see someone wearing your rival school's colors on campus.

"What are they doing here?"

3. There's always something happening for the game.

Whether it's watching at a sports bar, going to the game, or crowding together in your friend's apartment, there's always something happening to watch the game.

4. You know school pride like no one else.

When you have a rivalry this big, you know how to love your school through anything (even the heartbreaking losses).

5. It pisses you off when people that go to another school try to act like you are their rivals.

I'm sorry, when was the last time I cared about your school, or team, or anything?

6. You have a mutual respect for them.

We hate each other, but respectfully. You'll find us trash-talking and never more. We have a mutual understand that both schools are loved by their students, and we don't cross the line.

Nevertheless, Go Tar Heels!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
