We have all heard the age old saying, “The early bird gets the worm.” If you’re anything like me, then you know what it’s like to be a night owl which, you know, is the exact opposite.
I don’t think people realize that being a night owl does not put us at a disadvantage against the early birds. Sleeping in is okay for us because we never really miss anything in the mornings, we enjoy the night scene much more. This puts us at an advantage to do things like not only working midnight shifts, but being darn good at it too because we tend to function better later in the day and throughout the night.
This comes in handy if you’re also a procrastinator like me. I can’t tell you how many times I waited until the hour before a midnight deadline to work on a paper or project and got it done quickly and well because after 10 p.m. seems to be the time that I work best. Being a night owl allows you to stay up all night studying for finals and tests (or watching one or more seasons straight of whatever Netflix series we obsessing over at the time), which not everyone can do, not to mention sleepovers are all the more fun because we’re already used to not sleeping. We live in a beautiful day and age where anything that’s normally done bright and early can also be done when it’s late and dark. 24 hour gyms do exist and are virtually everywhere, McDonald’s started serving all day breakfast (because the world finally realized there should never be a time frame for pancakes) which make 3 a.m. work out sessions and pancake runs a thing. Not to mention, watching the sunset is just as beautiful as watching it rise.
As I mentioned earlier, deadlines even turned from first thing in the morning to midnight. However, night owls are versatile, determined people and can often get up as early as they stay up late. School and work do exist and sometimes we get stuck with a morning shift or 8 a.m. class, but still deal with our responsibilities and can act as ‘early birds’ when needed. We don’t get much sleep, which makes us appreciate the moments we do more. We live for the deep late night conversations, and amusement of trying to quietly make pizza rolls at 2 a.m. We are not normal people, we do not get the worm. Instead, we get unusual memories, and a chance to see both sides of the world turning. We are sleep deprived and in some cases procrastinators, but we have our own way of functioning and it works for us. Being a night owl, in my opinion, isn’t so bad.
