What It Means To Be A Millennial

The truth about the "Netflix and chill" generation.

The Huffington Post

We are the nostalgic 90's kids and the tech savvy young adults. Dubbed by Time Magazine as the "Me Me Me" generation, we're the kids that seem to only care about ourselves. It is said that we are the self-obsessed, entitled, and lazy. The truth is, millennial's are the generation of today. We are the future leaders, engineers, writers, and the next creative thinkers. This is not a generation of lazy, self-absorbed kids -- this is a generation of new ideas and changing times.

The millennials are different. This may be due to how we were raised or how relevant technology has been in our lives, but growing up in the 90's or early 2000's was something to remember. Let's think back on the good old days of Webkinz and Heeley's. I'm sure these spark fond memories for most of the childhood we know and love. These seemingly childish activities are what have created our tech savvy, fun-loving nature. We are the connected generation. A benefit to being on social media is the networking it provides. We are the first generation to have truly grown up surrounded by technology and social media which totally works in our favor.

They say that we're lazy. I mean, honestly I can't really blame them, we do have this weird obsession with binge watching Netflix. It's also said that we crave attention, and yes, we are the "selfie" generation. Not everyone can fit into these generalizations, however most of us have a tendency to do things for the Instagram picture. Although, I would definitely prefer to believe only the good things are true (how self-absorbed of me #millennial), there are a few characteristics that are undeniably imperfect.

So what does it mean to be a millennial? It means that soon you are going to be getting a job and changing the world, if you haven't already. We are becoming one of the most environmentally conscious groups of people this world has seen yet. In Canada we are called The Sunshine Generation because of our confidence and motivation. We strongly believe in equality and are the most "color-blind" generation. Being a millennial means that you may be criticized for the negative things associated with it, but we have to remember that we are an incredibly unique group.

The interesting part of all the controversy surrounding our generation is how it pertains to the work force. If you look up information about millennials, you'll find hundreds of articles all about "how to employ them" or "how to keep them happy at work." The hard truth that scares so many is that we are different and things are changing. We are the generation that is bound to make an impact and that's something to be proud of.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
