What Is Your "Why?"

A blog post challenging one to consider their "why" in life, and what pushes them to continue forward.

Samuel Marcus Obsorn(Sam), transitioned peacefully into the arms of Christ on June 1, 2022 at Omaha Children's Hospital at the age of 17. To have only been projected to live until the age of 8, Sam didn't allow his muscular dystrophy get in the way of life as he loved to travel, play sports/games, and perfect his studies. Sam leaves behind a wonderful family who loves him dearly, for whom he was the glue and will continue to be.

What is your "why?" I heard that not too long ago, and ever since then, it’s resonated within me and I've constantly tried to figure out why it stuck so much. Little did I know, it’d be preparing me to lose some of the greatest people in my life, but moreover, it’d help me understand the context and meaning of that question.

By way of Grace(Sam’s sister) and Howie(Grace’s boyfriend), I met Sam a few years back in October and I was immediately drawn to his infectious smile, love for chicken tenders(I love chicken tenders too, so we really bonded), and his love for music which is something that I absolutely love. Like the rest of the Osborn siblings, little did I know, Sam would become like a “little-big” brother to me in the most special way. I say “little-big” brother because although I’m the oldest, he had the IQ of a beast(I mean, he did score a 34 on the ACT) and anything he said, you couldn’t dare argue - he was always right.

Over the course of time, Sam and I would grow to love each other, take several trips, make weird facial expressions at each other when something went “rogue”, and figure out which songs suited our brotherhood best.I’d be lying if I didn’t say that Sam touched my life for the better. In my short time of knowing him, he’s taught me so much and I’m better because of him. As those who knew Sam, he touched a tremendous amount of people in his 17 years of life - those 17 years full of joy, laughter, and all the good. And in those 17 years, Sam figured out and knew his “why” and lived it each and every day.

So,I ask, what is your "why?" Is it making it your life’s mission to touch other’s souls through ministry or is it to be the next Creighton basketball point guard? You tell me. Whatever it is, I hope you live out your why as Sam did and never take anything for granted. I find peace and comfort today knowing where Sam is and know that I’ll see him again. May we always reflect on the memories shared with our loved ones and love that bounds between us.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
