What Exactly Is Writing?

Writing is a form of art, but what else is it?

Most of us write on an everyday basis. Whether we are writing a grocery list, a poem or even when we send someone a text we are writing in some form or another, but what exactly is writing?

Writing is about getting our thoughts out there and not caring if it offends someone. Not everyone is going to like what you write, and that is okay! For example, I do not like Shakespeare, but he is known as one of the best written author in English literature. I have read several of his plays and sonnets and I personally don't care for his works. However, that does not mean that he isn't a brilliant writer, that just means that I don't like his work.

If you write something and someone or maybe even several people say they don't like it, it doesn't mean you are a bad writer. Getting constructive criticism is going to help you grow, but do not try to please everyone with your writing because that is only going to stress you out and make you unoriginal. It is also okay to make people mad if you are saying what you think. However, that doesn't mean you can be a total jerk in your writing. It simply means that you should do what makes you happy. Don't try to censor yourself. If we censored everything, art would not exist.

So again, what is writing?

Writing is an outlet for all the things that bother you, or in some way, shape or form, affects you emotionally. Write about what matters to you and not about what matters to everyone else. The chances are there is someone out there that has the same opinion as you and is just too afraid to say it. When you write, it isn't about getting a lot of attention. Although publicity is great because it will help you later if you want to become a writer, writing is more about getting through to at least one person. Even if that one person is yourself, your mom or your friend, if you can change at least one person's life because of what you write, you are a phenominal writer. Writing is you.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
