What's Up With SB4?

Texas' new law which would allow for policemen to do some of the similar things ICE agents do, including ask for proof of citizenship and legal documents, at routine traffic stops

If you've been watching the news lately you might have heard about Texas governor, Greg Abbott, signed off on SB4. What is SB4 you ask?

Well to put it into simple words, it would policemen the right to act as ICE officers. Meaning, a routine traffic stop could turn into something more serious, like someone getting deported. Sanctuary cities would no longer be safe. This is bringing fear into people's lives. Families could be split up, kids are going to grow up without their parents by their side or they could end up in the foster care. People could be deported back to "their home country" with nothing and nowhere to stay. Most people leave their countries fleeing the violence and poverty they had and leave everything when they come to the United States. Not only would it hurt people and their families but it could also bring racial profiling.

Racial profiling is real and a problem here in the United States. It happens all the time, our president even said it "They're bringing drugs, they're bringing crime, they're rapists," talking about Mexican Immigrants. Now that policemen can ask for papers it brings up the question of "How will they truly know if there is any suspicion that, that person, is actually Mexican or any sort of immigrant?"

Not all immigrants look like the same.

There really is no way to tell whether a person is a legal citizen or not. Not everyone carries their birth certificate or social security card with them everywhere they go to prove they were born her or became legal citizens. SB4 would just encourage racial profiling since everyone seems to assume because someone is darker and has an accent, they're Mexican and illegal.

People tend to categorize Mexicans as illegal immigrants. They think we all are tan, hairy, and dirty. Really, Mexicans come from all different backgrounds, meaning some have white skin, blonde hair, and even blue eyes. So there really isn't a way to tell whether a person is an illegal immigrant without asking everyone they pull over, but we all know that's not going to happen.

Also, immigrants don't just come from Mexico. People tend to confuse that all immigrants are Mexican when it's been said multiple times that Asian/Indian illegal immigrants outnumber Mexican immigrants. So why is Texas just focusing on Mexicans? It's truly unfair, this is what our president is doing. He has managed to brainwash people into thinking the only threat of illegal immigration are Mexicans.

The way I see it, is Policemen need to "stay in their lane." They are here to help and protect neighborhoods, not bring fear and split up families. I know illegal immigration is illegal but sometimes it's all people have. SB4 wouldn't do any help, it would just bring more problems internally and externally.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
