What if one day we woke up and all form of technology stopped working? What if there was nothing to fix it? What if it just shut off one day with no explanation? What would we do? Would we be able to operate day to day as we used to? Or, would this cause havoc across the world?
In today's modern society, technology has become a vital resource. It is no longer used just to aid us in our day to day activities. It has become a staple in our lives. Would we be able to travel without a GPS? Does anyone even know how to use a map anymore? How many people would feel disconnected from their lives? In a world where social media has become an extension of our lives, how would most people feel with a sense of disconnection? Would we try and adapt, or just wait around until technology turned back on?
Maybe it never turns back on; maybe we need to operate life like we did ten or twenty years ago. Sometimes, I wonder if those adjustments are even possible anymore. We rely so heavily on technology to guide us through everyday that a complete uncalled shutdown of technology would have detrimental effects on our society. We may not realize it, but technology and social media are a part of our every day life more than we realize. We use social media to keep updated on recent events and we use hundreds of apps for various reasons. Technology and the sophisticated advancement of such technology has left its mark on human history. It helps us become more advanced and efficient in our every day lives, but sometimes it takes a bit of us away. Our sense of surviving has been dramatically altered. Most people wouldn't know what to do if they were stranded in a strange place without their smart phones. The idea of a complete shut down of technology may seem impossible, but something that relays on computer chips and algorithms, can always be reset or simply shut off. Next time you turn on your smart phone and use an app to help you complete a simple task, ask yourself: would I still be able to complete this task if my phone just stopped working? Our lives have become so cluttered with social media and various forms of technology that a part of our humanity has been lost. Maybe if it all shut off one day, people would start talking to each other once again, conversing with strangers in elevators, or having a conversation while with their friends and not being glued to their phones. Sure, we all love to look at the positive effects social media and technology has had on our generation, but we must understand that it comes with a sacrifice. The sacrifice is our social ability. For the first time ever, humans have become so connected through media and social media.
With ultimate connection, it is almost like we have drifted further apart.
