Dear Juniors and Seniors,
Your time as a high school student are quickly coming to a close. It will honestly feel like 3 seconds have passed and you will be walking across the stage to get your diploma and then you will be starting the rest of life. You will be going on to college, hitting the work force running, or maybe even getting married and starting a family. Who knows? I know right now you have to be stressed out about classes, what you're going to wear tomorrow, or even stressed that the cute boy in the corner won't talk to you. Those are normal to worry about as a high school student, but as a college senior looking back, here are some things you should be stressing about:
- Getting to know the people in your class.
Once you graduate you will never see most of them again, even if you end up living in your hometown. Life just gets crazy and you drift apart, even if it is some of your closest friends.
- Enjoying your time in high school while you have it.
Take the time to smell the roses. Take the time to have as many sleepovers with your friends staying up until 4 in the morning doing things that are too embarrassing to tell anyone else. Tailgate with your classmates before football games. Bring games like corn-hole or whiffle ball and play it in the parking lot of your high school. Dress up for spirit week. Go to every sporting event and cheer on your team with a full pep section. These are memories that you will never forget.
- Working to change something if you don't like it.
If you don't like how you're doing in a class, put in the effort to make a change. Push yourself to do better and make better grades. If you're struggling with a concept ASK FOR HELP. If you think a new rule is ridiculous and is too strick, talk to your administration. Ask them why they put this rule in place, maybe you can come to a compromise. If not, trust that the administration enacts those rules with the best interest of students in mind.
- Not worrying about what anyone thinks or says about you.
People are going to talk regardless if you fit their "standards" or not. "You do you, Boo Boo," is the best piece of advice I could give anyone. Do what makes you happy, this will make your time in high school much more enjoyable!
These four things made my time in high school great, and coming to college with this mindset made these years even better than I could have imagined. It was great coming to school being confident in myself knowing that no one could rip me apart with their glances. Learning to actually live these things out in my everyday life made the transition into college even easier for me. I hope that you will have the same amazing years as I did. Make the most of it, but also look forward to the better things that are waiting for you as soon as you get the diploma. Things can only get better from here.
Yours Truly,
The Girl Who Never Cared What Anyone Thought.
